Read the room as a service drawing

A kitchen wall cabinet may sit above sockets, an extractor spur or plumbing for a sink. A bathroom mirror cabinet may be near a light, shaver supply, basin pipes or a room on the other side with different fittings. Mark all of them before choosing hole positions. Open cupboards and inspect accessible service routes without disturbing covers or fittings you are not competent to handle.

Electrical Safety First says modern cables normally run horizontally or vertically to accessories and may also occupy zones within 15 cm of the top of a wall or a corner. Use these as warning zones, not a wiring map. Older work, later alterations and the reverse side can change the picture.

HSE advises checking both sides and seeking plans of the electrical installation before cutting into surfaces. Ask for renovation drawings, kitchen installer photos or handover information where they exist. No plan is complete proof, but it may reveal a route that a quick scan would miss.

Distinguish detectable targets from the services you fear

“Pipe and cable detector” is only meaningful when the manual states what kind of pipe and what cable condition it can indicate. Metal-detection capability may show copper or steel under stated conditions. It does not follow that a detector can find a plastic water pipe. If plastic or water-filled plastic pipe is not explicitly listed for the exact model and mode, treat it as potentially invisible.

Live-wire indication has a similar boundary. Some tools depend on an energised cable and suitable electrical conditions. HSE warns that some detectors may miss a wire carrying a small current. A cable can also be present where a display is quiet. Do not switch appliances on or alter circuits merely to manipulate a detector unless the manufacturer’s instructions and a competent electrical safe system permit it.

Finally, a broad metal response does not identify whether the object is a pipe, cable armour, corner bead, fastener or reinforcement. It creates an exclusion/investigation area.

Choose a model from its manual backwards

Begin with the target and substrate, then open the candidate manual. Look for a stable model identifier, target list, compatible wall types, start/calibration sequence, required hand contact, movement speed, warning meanings and failure conditions. Reject the idea that the largest number on the sales page answers all of those questions.

For a mixed trade shortlist, use the evidence-first scanner criteria. For a named Truvo comparison, remember that Bosch’s current official Truvo target list is metal and live cables—not plastic pipe and not wood studs. Product categories overlap in language but not necessarily in capability.

Where the exact pipe location is safety-critical, use drawings and a competent plumbing investigation appropriate to the building rather than forcing a consumer wall detector to answer outside its scope.

Scan an area, not a dot

Mark the complete cabinet, rail, mirror or accessory footprint and every permitted fixing option from its instructions. Start the detector on a location allowed by its manual, keep contact and orientation consistent, then cross the entire zone at the stated pace. Mark where each warning starts and ends. Repeat from the reverse direction and at multiple heights.

Run relevant modes separately if the instructions require it. Compare marks with sockets, taps and likely routes. A stable vertical or horizontal line deserves more caution than an isolated signal, but both remain unidentified objects until supported by other evidence. A changing or saturated display is not a reason to average the marks; it is an unresolved result.

If the project is in a rented home, permission and deposit evidence come before this method. The rented-flat plan keeps written consent and minimal holes in the decision.

Keep fixing and service decisions separate

Finding a likely clear area does not prove that area can carry a loaded cabinet. Confirm whether the wall is framed, masonry, dry-lined masonry, tiled board or another build, then follow the cabinet/mirror and fixing manufacturers’ substrate instructions. A long fixing chosen to “reach something solid” can increase service penetration risk if the route is not established.

Do not improvise around a warning by moving a hole a few millimetres. Use an alternative fixing position explicitly allowed by the item design, reposition the item, expose/investigate the construction through a competent method, or hand the job to a qualified installer. Kitchen or bathroom pre-drill sequence

  1. Read the cabinet, mirror and fixing instructions before choosing the zone.
  2. Mark sockets, switches, lights, fused spurs, taps, wastes, radiators and appliances.
  3. Inspect the reverse wall and obtain plans or installation photos where available.
  4. Confirm the wall build using evidence beyond the detector.
  5. Match the exact detector model/manual to each target material and condition.
  6. Scan the entire fixing area in both directions and at multiple heights.
  7. Mark every repeatable service or unidentified-object warning as an exclusion.
  8. Stop and use the appropriate competent trade where a route or substrate is unresolved.

Questions people ask

Can a wall detector find plastic water pipes?

Only rely on that if the exact model and manual explicitly name the relevant plastic or water-filled pipe and conditions. Otherwise treat plastic pipe as potentially undetectable.

Is it safe to drill when no live cable is shown?

No. Some cable detectors can miss a wire carrying a small current, and route clues or other conditions may still indicate a cable. A blank display is not clearance.

Why scan from both directions?

Repeat passes help show whether an edge or warning is stable. Disagreement is useful evidence that the result is unresolved, not something to average away.

Who should investigate an uncertain wall?

Use the competent trade that matches the consequence: electrician for electrical uncertainty, plumber for services, or an experienced fixing/installation professional for the wall and load path.
