Start with the bracket decision, not the gadget
A 55-inch television arriving in the living room creates understandable pressure to make the first hole count. Slow the decision down before the drill comes out. Record the television and bracket model, the bracket’s fixing instructions, the proposed height and the full rectangle in which its fixing holes could land. The detector is there to investigate that rectangle. It does not decide whether the bracket can use two, four or more fixing points, and it does not replace the bracket manufacturer’s loading and substrate instructions.
Look at the room as a service layout. A socket below the proposed screen is not just an inconvenience for cable management; it is a clue that concealed wiring may run vertically or horizontally. A radiator, tap, consumer-unit direction, wall light or fitting on the other side gives further clues. The Electrical Safety First home guide explains that modern cable routes are normally straight to accessories and can also occupy zones near wall tops and corners. “Normally” is important: alterations and older work can depart from the pattern.
Draw those clues on masking tape or a photo before scanning. This avoids the common error of letting the detector’s display erase information that was visible in the room.
Identify the wall family before interpreting a stud signal
A hollow-sounding framed plasterboard wall, plasterboard bonded over masonry (often called dot-and-dab), solid masonry and lath-and-plaster present different fixing and scanning problems. Do not diagnose the build from sound alone. Check drawings or handover information, inspect an existing opening where it is safe to do so, compare both sides, and ask the builder or landlord when that evidence exists.
On framed plasterboard, a repeatable density change may support a stud hypothesis, but the material could be timber, metal framing, a board joint, insulation or another object. On plasterboard over masonry, a response may come from the masonry, adhesive or services rather than a timber stud. On solid masonry, the job is generally to avoid services and choose a fixing system for that substrate—not to find a wooden stud. Old lath-and-plaster needs its own period-wall method and failure boundary.
This classification prevents a dangerous leap: “the scanner showed a centre, therefore I have a sound stud and the supplied screw is right”. A detector reading and a structural fixing decision are separate pieces of work.
Treat hidden-service clues as exclusions, not targets to squeeze past
Before drilling into a surface, HSE guidance says to look for electrical wires and other hazards, check both sides, seek installation plans, and—if competent—use a suitable cable detector in line with its guide. It also gives a vital limitation: some detectors will not find a wire carrying a small current. A no-warning pass therefore cannot prove an area is clear.
Mark a conservative exclusion area around a repeatable live-wire or metal warning. Do not keep rescanning until one pass produces the answer you wanted. Moving the television a little, changing bracket hole options within the manufacturer’s design, or asking an electrician/installer to investigate is better than converting uncertainty into a hole.
Wall scanners also have target limits. If the manual does not say the exact model detects a material in the wall you have, assume that target may be missed. The same applies to wall coverings, moisture, foil, mesh and tightly grouped objects: consult the model instructions rather than borrowing a depth from another detector.
Run a repeatable scan across the whole fixing zone
Remove jewellery from the scanning hand and clear loose metal from the immediate area if the tool instructions require it. Fit a known-good battery, read the manual’s start/calibration procedure, and keep the tool flat in its stated orientation. Begin outside the intended hole rather than directly over the answer you hope to find.
Scan slowly across the complete bracket zone. Mark the point at which an object indication begins and ends; then approach from the opposite direction. Move vertically and repeat at several heights. A plausible framing line should be coherent rather than appearing as one isolated dot. Run the relevant metal/live-wire check over the same area. If a reading moves substantially, disappears on the reverse pass or collides with a socket route, record it as unresolved.
A magnet can be a useful independent check for a vertical series of metal board fasteners, but it does not show the stud edges or hidden cables. Convert the marks into a fixing plan—or a deliberate stop
Lay the bracket template over the evidence. For every proposed hole, write down: confirmed wall family, repeated object evidence, nearby service clue, scanner mode/result, and the bracket/fixing instruction being followed. This small record helps expose a plan that depends on one ambiguous point.
If you have confirmed sound timber framing, select only a fixing route allowed by the bracket and fixing manufacturers. If the wall is masonry behind plasterboard, use a system designed for that complete build and bridge/cavity condition; do not improvise from an article. If it is metal framing, crumbly old plaster or an unknown composite, get a fixing specialist or installer to design the attachment.
Finally, consider cable management separately. Chasing a cable, fitting a recessed box or adding a socket changes the scope and may require an electrician. A tidy screen is not a reason to turn a mounting job into unplanned electrical work.

- Confirm the television, bracket and all manufacturer instructions are present.
- Mark the complete bracket fixing zone rather than one preferred hole.
- Record wall-build evidence and note what remains uncertain.
- Inspect both wall faces and mark sockets, switches, lights, taps and radiators.
- Read the detector manual for targets, calibration, grip and wall limitations.
- Scan horizontally and vertically from both directions; mark repeatable edges and warnings.
- Match every planned hole to the fixing instructions for the confirmed substrate.
- Stop if any hole depends on a conflicting signal, likely service or unverified wall build.
Questions people ask
Does a stud-finder centre mark prove the bracket can be fixed there?
No. It is evidence of an object pattern, not proof of the material, condition, load path or correct fixing. Confirm the wall and follow the bracket and fixing manufacturers’ instructions.
Can I mount a TV directly above a socket?
Do not assume that area is clear. Cables in modern installations normally run horizontally or vertically to accessories, and real installations may vary. Map the route, scan and stop if uncertainty remains.
Will an electronic detector identify a dot-and-dab wall?
Not by itself. Plasterboard, adhesive, a cavity, masonry and concealed services can all affect readings. Use building information or a competent inspection to confirm the construction.
Is one clear scan enough before drilling?
No. Scan the full fixing zone from both directions and at several heights, then compare the result with visible service clues and the tool instructions.
