Define the work mix before making a shortlist
An installer with tomorrow’s television and cabinet appointments needs fewer surprises, not more marketing modes. List the last or expected jobs by substrate and consequence: dry-lined masonry, framed plasterboard, solid masonry, tiled wet-room walls, period plaster and walls near electrical or plumbing accessories. Score “unknown” as unknown. Do not award a point because a marketplace bullet uses “professional”, “accurate” or “advanced”. Ask the seller or manufacturer for the missing document, and keep it with the purchase decision.
Separate detection performance from workflow performance
A wall scanner can have a credible target specification yet be awkward in paid work. Evaluate whether controls can be understood without guessing, whether the display remains readable at the edge of a cabinet, whether sound can be managed in occupied homes, whether the tool keeps contact over the surface, and whether operators can record the same edges on repeat passes.
Do this on known, representative training panels or documented walls where the hidden layout is established independently. The purpose is to learn the interface and expose inconsistent operation, not to publish an invented accuracy percentage. Log wall, mode, direction, speed, battery state, first mark and reverse-pass mark. If results differ, consult the manual before blaming either the wall or tool.

Build a standard scan record for every operator
Consistency is a purchasing criterion because the tool will be used under time pressure.
